What’s Great About Group Courses?

At Avancée, we know that language learning works best through real-life interaction. Small groups provide the right mix of engagement and personal attention, allowing for lively conversations, different viewpoints, and a supportive space to learn and grow.

Communication & Authenticity, Engagement & Collaboration

Language is a tool for communication, and small groups simulate real-life conversations better than one-to-one lessons. You get to interact with multiple people, adapt to different accents, and respond to unpredictable dialogue—just like in the real-world! In private lessons, conversations are between the student and teacher, which may feel artificial. In small groups, discussions are more dynamic, requiring negotiation of meaning, turn-taking, and real conversational flow.

Learning with peers also creates a sense of community and accountability. Group dynamics encourage participation, healthy competition, and mutual support, which can make learning more enjoyable and motivating.

In groups, students get to work together on activities, role-plays, and problem-solving tasks, reinforcing their understanding in a way that private lessons can’t fully replicate.

Learning from Mistakes, Less Pressure, More Confidence

Hearing classmates speak, make mistakes, and get corrected helps reinforce learning. You learn from their errors and successes, which can accelerate your understanding and retention of the language. While private lessons can sometimes feel intense with all the focus on one student, in a small group the pressure is distributed, making it easier to participate and gradually build confidence in speaking.

Small Groups, Personal Attention

At Avancée, a group starts from 2 participants (Professional Development Courses), with a maximum of 8.  This allows the teacher to provide individualized feedback while maintaining group interaction. Enough attention to correct mistakes without losing the opportunity to learn from peers!

Money Matters

Private lessons are more expensive, and while they provide direct attention, they lack the varied interaction of a group. Small group courses offer quality instruction at a more affordable price while still providing a personalised experience.

Moving Forward

A combination of both private and small group lessons often leads to the best results!
